UNLV Women's Sports Foundation Honor Female Athletes

Calendar of Events

Now in its twelfth year, the UNLV Women's Sports Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the total educational experience of the female student-athlete. The group helps promote the academic and athletic accomplishments of the women's programs through both community and campus support.

The UNLV Women's Sports Foundation was created to develop and recognize the exemplary performance by women athletes, both on the field and in the classroom.

UNLV's women's athletics, fielding teams in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, indoor and outdoor track & field and volleyball, are nationally competitive programs and look to be leaders in the Mountain West Conference. UNLV Associate Athletic Director Lisa A. Kelleher says the UNLV WSF fills a void for female athletics in the college setting.

"The UNLV Women's Sports Foundation gives some opportunities to female student-athletes that weren't necessarily there before," said Kelleher, the school's senior woman administrator. "The group's purpose is to raise funds for areas that may not fit into each sport's budget - such as post-eligibility scholarships, conference champion awards and sometimes even equipment. We're trying to give the women's programs everything they need to get the best possible results."

The member-supported foundation sponsors various social events throughout the school year, including fund-raisers and a banquet to recognize the outstanding female student-athletes in each sport. All proceeds go directly to the women's programs. Last season's Sportswoman of the Year Award was presented to UNLV swimmer Lorena Diaconescu. Lorena is a two-time NCAA All-American following her 13th place finish in the 200 free at the 2001 NCAA Championships, and also a 1996 and 2000 Olympian, competing for Romania.

From civic leaders to college faculty to just sports fans in general, the UNLV WSF has more than 100 members and counting. For more information about the UNLV Women's Sports Foundation contact:
